The home of the world's most famous peated whisky, dividing drinkers with that love-it-or-hate-it spike of pungent smoke since 1815, sits before the wild granite hills of Islay. Whiskies range from the 10 year old to an exceptionally rare 40 year old, taking in cask strength and a triple cask matured dram along the way. You can visit the iconic distillery to roam about on a tour, learn the history of the place at the museum, kick back with a dram and buy a nip or two to take home. Tours of different detail are available, from the standard hour-long whip round to a connoisseur's experience for £79, including lunch, the chance to get involved with some of the day-to-day tasks like peat cutting and malt-turning, and more than a couple of tasters (March–September, weekdays only).
